Quilts & Fabric Arts: Three Traditions

Our March artists are Janyth Bonney, Vanessa Johnson and Sharon Bottle Souva. Although they each work with fabric, their materials, techniques and expressions vary greatly, ranging from traditional quilts to storytelling wall hangings.

Janyth Bonney’s mother taught her to sew in early childhood, and she has been quilting since the 1990s. She donates many of her quilts to numerous causes, including to veterans who participate in the honor flights to Washington, D.C.

Vanessa Johnson is a Griot, a storyteller in the West African tradition. She uses cloth from West Africa and the Americas as well as the weaving, tie dye, painting and batik traditions of Ghana, which she combines with U.S. quilt and fiber traditions to tell the full spectrum of her life as a woman of African descent.

Sharon Bottle Souva grew up on a farm in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, where she was drawn into the beauty of trees, flowers and rolling farm hills. She uses this inspiration to incorporate a sense of realism edged with minimalism to translate the simplicity of nature into her designs.

Please enjoy this diverse collection Sundays from 9 am to 1 pm or Mondays and Thursdays from 9 am to 2 pm thru March 30 in our Social Hall gallery.
