To the members of May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society

(from Reverend Jo)

My loves, it has been brought to my attention, and we have confirmed that the accused shooter of the three Palestinian American students in Vermont this past weekend, Jason Eaton, was a member of May Memorial for some time, though he is no longer active.  We are a congregation and a people who strive to side with love at every opportunity which is why it might feel impossible to you, too, that someone who (at least at one time) shared our values could do something as terrible as this.

My devastation, sadness, and anger joins yours and the families of these young victims.  In a world where islamophobia and antisemitism are on the rise, we must continue to side with love.  As Unitarian Universalists, our Principles and Values call us to denounce violence and evil in all forms.  We condemn this act and all acts of hate, especially those grounded in religious and ethnic identity. Our Principles and values call us to center love at all times and in all situations. In times such as these, we will answer this, and any act of hate, with love.

I know that this tragic event may be affecting everyone in a different way.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me at any time if you need to reflect or process this information.

With love, and in deep grief,

Rev. Jo VonRue
