Roger Hiemstra served as archivist of May Memorial for 10 years, from 2004-2014. His 2015 book called May Memorial’s Historical Tree of Life contains 128 articles written during his tenure for the MMUUS newsletter. When Roger stepped down, Jay Brenner replaced him as chair of the History Committee, and in 2016 Mary Louise Edwards took on the role of chair.

The May Memorial History Committee meets at 8:00 PM on the third Wednesday of the month in room 8. Anyone with an interest in learning more about the work of the committee is welcome to attend. (Please let us know ahead of time so that we can let you into the lower level.)

Thanks to the donation of a new file cabinet this year, the History Committee has an opportunity to inventory and organize some of the materials received over the past several years from church leaders. We often spend part of our meeting time on this project.

Specific History Committee initiatives for this year include:

1. Transcribing interviews recorded over the past decade with long-time members

and friends (temporarily shifting our focus from conducting interviews).

2. Writing a monthly newsletter column highlighting portions of those interviews.

3. Digitizing important audio and video tapes for better long-term storage.

4. Scanning historic papers and photographs to make an electronic record.
